Proper grounding of your energizer is of upmost importance for your system to work at peak performance.
The grounding system of your fence works much like the antenna for a radio - the larger the antenna, the better reception.
A couple rules of thumb are: 3' of ground rod per output joule, for example a 5 joule energizer will require a minimum of 15 total feet of ground rods ( or 3- 6'rods). Another rule is 1-6' ground rod for the first joule then an additional rod for each additional two joules.
We offer 5/8" diameter galvanized ground rods in both 6' & 8' lengths. If you think you can get the 8' ones in, we recommend it. Your rods should be installed at spacings of 10' apart. We recommend using insulated wire for the hookups. You may use galvanized or copper rods, but don't use dis-simular metals in your connections, ie: if using copper rods, then use copper wire for your hookups. Since your electric fence wire will most likely be galvanized we highly recommend using like materials in grounding. Dis-simular metals in contact (electrosis) create a bad connection over time.
Install ground rods in areas of permanent moisture. Under a drip line of a building works well.
Keep your ground rods at least 35' away from other grounding systems on the farm or utility grounds. Make sure that your clamp connections are snug and tight.
TESTING YOUR GROUND - An easy way to test your ground to make sure you have enough rods is to apply a load on your fence (such as laying some metal or t-post into your electrified wire) do this about 100' down the fence from the charger.....intentionally try to drop your voltage down to 1000 volts. Now, take your digital voltmeter and take a reading off of your last ground rod. You should read less than 300volts (or .3 KV). If your are reading over that, then it is telling you to add more ground rods.
